Education in Russia for animation
Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography
They say they are training students to become specialists in film, video, television and other screen arts programs for higher, secondary and further education. It's the only national state film school which has a training film studio with a full production cycle for the production of films and videos.
St. Petersburg State University
They claim that the Russian film industry doesn't have enough artist directors, both in film and animation, and are confident that their courses within the Faculty of Arts department will allow students to develop the skills needed to develop the artistic side of a director for film and television.
ARTkino
ARTkino is effectively a 'Cinema Club'. It doesn't seem like it's officially educational (like getting a certificate for completing the degree) but is a place where like minded people who like film and want to understand can get help in realising their creative potential in cinema and expand their skills. It's held weekly, Saturday's for the basic training course and Sunday for the master course. They have two branches. One in St. Petersburg and one in Sochi.
Lomonosov Moscow State University
Located in Moscow, this is the largest and oldest university in Russia. In order to study animation of any sort there, you'd need to enrol with their 'School of Television'. It's fairly new, having only started in 2008. They enrol about 40 students per year, and that number is steadily increasing. They cover a range of different skills, and don't focus on one area of TV or film. They study a lot of history behind the Russian industry and get to do some practical work with the Moscow and federal television and radio broadcasting companies, so they can learn basic television skills such as presenting on camera, reporting and interviewing. When you become a senior student, that's when you can start to explore with animation. There is no course that is specifically animation and nothing else in this university.
The Rodchenko Moscow School of Photography and Multimedia
Founded in 2006 and located in Moscow, this school is for students who want to develop their skills in the areas of digital photography, video, post-production, editing images and media. Again, it seems like they're not focusing on animation specifically, but I believe it's possible to make animations on their courses as I have seen that someone from their school who has submitted an animation in the Open Film Festival for Students and Beginners.
